There a couple of good free alternatives to Microsoft Office out there that I like. First is Libre Office, which is supported and has feature you would expect from an Office product. The next one is Google Docs, which is online and free and part of your account when you sign up for a google service, like gmail for example. So no need to pay to have Office services that are very close to what you pay for from Microsoft. Hope this helps!

I have used Open Office in the past, but have found as an alternative that Libre Office has been better supported.
